My Secret Quick Escape Places in the Maldives

Taking a break from the hustle and bustle of city life can be expensive and time-consuming. In the last few years, I have discovered  tons of stunning spots that are great short trips away from Male’, specially when I am on a tight budget. These are few of my favorite secret escape places and please do let me know if you have any spots that I could possibly checkout!

Make the perfect beach trip.

Obviously the best part of Maldives is the breathtaking beaches. Relaxing on the pure white sand and swimming in the crystal clear water is the perfect way to unwind. With the loss of clean beaches in Male’ and around, I had to wander a bit far to find actual beaches.

My favorite go to place is Noovilu Suites, in Mahibadhoo (Mind you, I have no affiliation to them). This sweet guesthouse is nestled in the heart of Mahibadhoo Island. In Noovilu, you can relax in a hammock and take in the stunning ocean views. There are a number of great snorkeling and swimming spots all around the island!  You will also notice that the people on the island are also extremely easy going. Here is how I usually get myself there:

  • The most economic way to get from Male-Mahibadhoo is by MTCC ferry.

  • The ride is about 4h 30min. The ferry ticket cost is US$10.00 per person per way.

  • The ticket can be purchased at the ferry counter directly.

  • The ferry departs from Vilingili Ferry Terminal in Male.

I usually take the Thursday 4.00pm public speedboat and get back on the Saturday 6 pm night ferry, still giving me time to get some rest and be ready for work the next day.

Explore Hulhumalé Island.

I know this is a cliche', but did you know that there is a large number of people who have no idea about this quick trip you can take to hang out away from Male'. Discover the islands lush (comparatively) central park. It’s perfect for a day excursion away from the capital. Hulhumale is the kind of place I go with a friend to just hangout at the beach, have a coffee. It is so much better than being stuck in a crowded cafe in Male’.

One of our favourite coffee places is of course the family room. But there are tons of other random places we have popped in to.

Venture a bit Far if you dare!

If I get a long weekend or a few days break, I head myself to Addu or Laamu atoll. The flight is pricy but trust me, it is still worth it. Did you know that both these atoll has a huge marine life. You just have to find the right people to take you around. The only frustrating part is finding a small cheap guest house ( I prefer the small guest houses) in both these atolls. I am lucky to have family in both these atolls where I get to stay with them during my trips if I cant find a guesthouse or if I am super broke.

These are just a few of my favorite adventure places for you. The guesthouses are becoming popular amongst tourists, which is why the prices for accommodation are starting to rise. So just make sure you do your research to find budget-friendly options (they’re there, I promise!). Also please don't forget to mention that you are local so that they give you less expensive offers.
