Easy and healthy snacks to match an Maldives island hopping experience

Recently, my friends and I got on a ferry and we went hopping through the islands in Baa atoll. It was our version of a road trip, it is one of my favourite ways to explore, experience and see all the beautiful people and nature around. I can write twenty articles about the charm of it, but what about practical stuff? What about the costs of snacks and drinks while travelling? We often depend on the cafes and restaurants on the islands, but the prices are increasing. It is time to be creative and decrease those costs to make island hopping or travelling much more affordable and fun.

When travelling like this , I do not prefer eating at expensive restaurants each time I get hungry. In the last couple of years, I noticed that it is much cheaper to bring my own food along, especially when it comes to snacks. With more and more guest houses and restaurants springing up on the islands, the prices of food keep on increasing. So bringing my own food has become a must now.  I will tell you about my favorites.

A perfect snack to me is fruit or something like apple chips or any dried fruits I could get my hands on. I can easily buy it beforehand and preserve it for a while. I can get these at Fantasy store or at Seagull store. Super easy, and healthy. The same goes for nuts. It might cost a little bit more, but nuts are very preservative and only a small hand of it will keep me full for quite long. I can actually get relatively cheap nuts at Ufanveli store. Nuts are a good source of fat, fiber, protein and various vitamins. Another tasteful favorite is a nut bar (just like protein or granola bars). These are easily taken with you, I always pack my suitcase full with them before I leave home. Again, try the nut bars from Fantasy store. Yes! expensive but trust me, you will be glad you had one of these at hand when stuck in the middle of the ocean or waiting for a late ferry on an island.

For lunch, I often go for well filled sandwiches and wraps. Peanut butter or sandwich spread always tastes nice, especially when combined with snack vegetables like carrots or tomatoes. You can wait to buy vegetables and fruits from the islands. But beware sometimes finding someone who sell vegetables or fruits on an island might be harder than you think.

My tip for you: pack some cutlery in your backpack as well. When you come across a supermarket, you can buy a packs of nuts or some yoghurt for lunch without having to think about how to eat it.

There are definitely a lot more options, like (flavored) rice crackers and banana bread. Just go prepared, and you will be thankful for all the food in your backpack when you get hungry. Saving money while travelling always makes me happy, there are so many more (and better) things to spend it on.

I can only say: enjoy your travel… and your food!
